Overhead cranes that are supported by the roof structure and run on the bottom flange of runway girders are known as under-running EOT cranes. These cranes have a small trolley dimension which allows them to utilize the maximum building width and height. Additionally, the under-running configuration allows for the use of existing ceiling girders to protect the crane track. This configuration is best suited for applications where the crane must be installed in an existing building and space is limited. One of the major benefits of under-running EOT cranes is that they allow for more efficient use of the available space in a facility. They also tend to be more cost-effective than top-running cranes since they do not require the installation of new runway beams. However, they do have a lower capacity range than top-running cranes, which limits their ability to handle heavy loads.

Bridge: The horizontal beam that spans the width of the area to be covered. It is supported by end trucks or gantry trucks that run along elevated runways or tracks.

Runways or tracks: The rails or beams on which the bridge moves horizontally. These are typically mounted on the walls or columns of the building or supported by freestanding columns (in the case of a gantry crane).

Hoist: The device used to lift and lower the load. It typically consists of a motorized drum or winch, a set of ropes or chains, and a hook or lifting attachment. The hoist can move along the length of the bridge beam (longitudinally) and also vertically.

Trolley: The mechanism that travels horizontally along the length of the bridge beam. It carries the hoist and allows for precise positioning of the load.

Controls: The interface used by the crane operator to control the movement of the crane, including the hoist, trolley, and bridge. Controls can range from simple pendant switches to more sophisticated radio remote controls or cabin-operated systems.

Overhead cranes are used in various industries for tasks such as loading and unloading heavy materials, transporting goods between different locations within a facility, and assembling large machinery or equipment. They offer advantages such as high lifting capacity, precise positioning, and the ability to access hard-to-reach areas. Proper training and adherence to safety procedures are essential when operating overhead cranes due to the potential hazards associated with moving heavy loads at height.
